Rondel (Or Roundell) Dagger
Rondel (Or Roundell) Dagger   The functional (sharp point) rondel dagger gets its name from its disc-shaped guard and pommel, called rondels. During the 14th and 15th centuries the rondel dagger was a popular knightly weapon. It would have been worn on the right side and used as a back-up weapon when fighting was too close to use the primary weapon or when the fighter had otherwise been disarmed. The daggers varied in length and their blades were usually single- or double-edged, although in the 15th and 16th centuries some rondel daggers had triangular blades with equal sides, often lacking cutting edges.   Measurements and Specifications:
Weight : 0.4 Kg (without scabbard)
Overall length : 47cm
Blade length : 33cm (sharp tip)
Blade form : Triangular in cross-section
Grip length : 10.9cm
Guard width : 4.7cm (upper and lower)
Steel : EN45
The rondels that make up the guard and pommel are also cleanly made. They are not merely flat discs, but are thick in the centre where they meet the grip, and taper out to have thinner edges. This is a subtle detail that is prominent on period originals, yet many modern reproductions opt for the flat discs because they are easier to produce. The wood is solid and has a subtly attractive grain that does not overpower the rest of the aesthetics. The carving is expertly done, and feels very comfortable in hand. The grip is smooth, but there is no fear of it slipping due to the shape of the rondels, which hold the hand in place. There is enough room on the grip that one could also wear a steel gauntlet as well. The workmanship on this dagger is very impressive. The fine skill required to create it is evident. It is an excellent example of medieval daggers, in terms of utility as well as aesthetics. The overall appearance of this dagger is one of serious function, but the form is clearly created with pride and craftsmanship. It is the type of weapon that would have been appreciated by a common soldier as well as a wealthy knight. This dagger is NOT for practice and display purposes, as the tip of this dagger is sharp. The triangular cross-section scabbard has no wooden core. Most of the length of the sheath is formed from thick high quality leather, stitched on one side: giving it an impressive flexibility. The steel throat has a sturdy 7cm long steel clip to attach the scabbard onto any belt, so it will easily grace any period costume. The chape has an aesthetically pleasing spherical end, whilst the leather closely matches the colour of the wood used in the grip. Superb!   SKU: 33k76.snda8305.ke74(2250)
