A Set of three 20th Century Character Jugs

They are:

Lancaster & Sons, (July 1899 - 1944) hand painted, Character Jug of the Treasure Island character Long John Silver

First registered 1936, reg'd No.813218,

Made c.1938 - 44

 

Lancaster & Sandland Ltd. (1944 - Nov 1968) hand painted, Character Jug of Sairey Gamp.

Sarah or Sairey Gamp, Mrs. Gamp as she is more commonly known, is a nurse in the novel Martin Chuzzlewit by Charles Dickens, first published as a serial in 1843–1844.

Made 1949+

 

Sterling Pottery Ltd., (1939 - 1953) hand painted Character Jug of Bill Sykes.

William "Bill" Sykes is a fictional character and the main antagonist in the 1838 novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens.

Made 1950-53 when the company was part of the Lawley Group after the takeover by Ridgway in 1950

 

These Character jugs will make a great addition to any collection and display beautifully in any type of display setting.

 

The jugs are all the same Small Size.

Approximate measurements are 6.5 - 7cm high by 5 - 6cm diameter.

Total weight 258g.

 

CONDITION - Mostly  In good original used condition and showing slight wear consistent with age.

Sairey Gamp has a small chip on the inside back top.

The very early Long John has two tiny white paint flakes around the bottom.

Bill Sykes is perfect.

 

 

Some History

Lancaster & Sons Ltd. Hanley July 1899 - 1944.

Manufacture of  earthenware  at the  Dresden works , Tinkersclough, in the Shelton area of  Hanley ,  Stoke-on-Trent , England.

  Formerly Lancaster & Barker - the partners were Frederick John Lancaster, Emily Lancaster and Edward John Barker.

  When the partnership of Lancaster & Barker was dissolved in July 1899 the business was continued by Frederick John Lancaster.

'& Sons' was added to the company mark in 1906.

  At some time was renamed to Lancaster & Sons (Hanley) Ltd. Later the partners were Edwin Lancaster and Mr T H Sandland as a co-director.
