The Herend ceramics factory was founded in 1826 in Hungary and has been known throughout the world for its beautiful, hand painted porcelain that displays exquisite detail.Herend has survived wars and changing economies and is still in production today. In 1948 it became a government enterprise under the Communist regime and remained so until 1992 when it returned to private ownership. Now Herend employees own about 75% of the company's stock.
Many connoisseurs consider the Rothschild Bird pattern, first created in 1850 for the Rothschild family of Europe, to be the epitome of hand painting on porcelain. Twelve different motifs portray a 19th century tale about Baroness Rothschild, who lost her pearl necklace in the garden of her Vienna residence. Several days later it was found by her gardener, who saw birds playing with it in a tree.
Herend's master artists are highly trained and create each piece of dinnerware, figurine or accessory from scratch. Each and every piece of porcelain is intended for individual use but also is collected by the artistic connoisseur. Herend's legacy is as enduring as the cherished European tradition of its creation.
